The European Union has made a significant advancement in AI regulation with the establishment of an "AI Office." This new body, comprised of tech experts, lawyers, and economists, will oversee AI technologies under the newly approved "AI Act," the first comprehensive AI regulation in the world. The AI Act, initially proposed in 2021, gained momentum after ChatGPT's debut in 2022, highlighting the need for strict AI governance.
Mission and Structure of the AI Office
The AI Office's mission is to balance innovation with risk management, ensuring AI's societal and economic benefits while mitigating risks. It is divided into five units, focusing on excellence in AI and robotics, regulation, safety, innovation, and societal good, supported by two advisors on science and international affairs.
GenAI4EU Initiative
In January 2024, the EU launched 'GenAI4EU,' an initiative to support AI innovation, particularly for startups and SMEs, ensuring alignment with EU values. Key application areas include robotics, health, biotech, and climate.
Implementation and Criticism
The new AI regulations will be enforced by 2026, with specific rules for general-purpose AI like ChatGPT coming into effect 12 months after the law's adoption. Despite criticism from EU auditors about the need for stronger investment and governance, the EU defends its commitment, noting over €1 billion invested annually in AI research.
